Central Care Cancer Center has been recognized by one of the world’s leading oncology organizations in achieving high-quality practice certification at Heartland Cancer Center in Garden City. Central Care successfully completed a three-year certification recently for oncology practices that meets nationally recognized standards for cancer care by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification Program. Central Care is one of only a few oncology clinics to achieve QOPI certification in the state of Kansas.
The QOPI Certification Program (QCP) is an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which has been a leading oncology organization in the world for more than five decades. According to the ASCO website for QCP, “the certification process creates a culture of excellence and self-examination that helps practices deliver the best care to their patients. By becoming QOPI Certified, a practice demonstrates its commitment to quality to patients, payors, and the medical community.”
“ASCO’s QOPI Certification demonstrates an oncology practice’s dedication to providing high-quality care to patients with cancer,” said ASCO President Bruce E. Johnson, MD, FASCO. “The certification process is rigorous and by successfully completing it, providers put into practice their commitment to quality and safety excellence and continuous optimization of their processes.”
QOPI analyzes individual practice data and compares these to more than 160 evidence-based and consensus quality measures. The information is then provided in reports to participating practices. Individual practices also are able to compare their performance to data from other practices across the country.

To become QOPI Certified, practices have to submit to an evaluation of their entire practice and documentation standards. The QCP staff and task force members then verify through an on-site survey that the evaluation and documents are correct and that the practices met core standards in areas of treatment.
“It is commendable that we have earned this highest level of recognition, but it was not an unexpected event,” said Dr. Claudia Perez-Tamayo, MD, FACR, FACRO, President of Central Care Cancer Center. “Our excellent doctors and staff have always been committed to providing the best care to our patients in Western Kansas. People need to know that they don’t have to travel to a metropolitan area for their care. In fact, oncology practices in many cities do not achieve this level of certification.
